Most children with selective mutism have some form of extreme social fear . Parents often think that the child is choosing not to speak. Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder in which children do not speak in school, extracurricular or community activities, sports, etc., despite speaking at home or in other settings. Children with SM have the ability to speak and are often described by immediate family members as ‘chatty’ or ‘talkative’ when observed at home and in other select environments.
